They meet several times over the course of the school year, and the Governing Board has the following core strategic functions:

Establishing the strategic direction, by:

  • Setting the vision, values, and objectives for the school
  • Agreeing the school improvement strategy with priorities and targets
  • Meeting statutory duties

 

Ensuring accountability, by:

  • Appointing the headteacher
  • Monitoring the educational performance of the school and progress towards agreed targets
  • Performance managing the lead headteacher (where delegated)
  • Engaging with stakeholders
  • Contributing to school self-evaluation

 

Overseeing financial performance, by:

  • Setting the budget
  • Monitoring spending against the budget
  • Ensuring money is well spent and value for money is obtained
  • Ensuring risks to the organisation are managed

  

How Governors have been supporting school.

Autumn term 2023:

  • Governors interviewed for the Interim Assistant Headteachers starting from January 2024. 
  • Governors attended safeguarding training to develop their awareness of the changes to Keeping Children Safe in Education 2023. 
  • A governor supported staff with coaching opportunities to develop their professional development. 
  • Governors attended the School Effectiveness Sub-Committee, Finance and Subcommittee and Full Governing Board meeting. 
  • Parent governor election sent out to the school community to elect a parent governor. 
  • Governors attended a Governors Development Session ran by Melanie Larkin (Governors Services Manager) to develop the boards strategic approach to school management. 

   

Summer term 2023:

  • Governors attended a twilight INSET session led by B Lynch to contribute to the new school values.
  • Governors received initial results from a staff wellbeing survey; lines of enquiry were identified and further staff voice activities will be planned for Autumn term 2023.
  • Chair and Vice Chair were involved in appointing a maternity cover position on the school’s Senior Leadership Team.
  • Governors attended various out-of-school activities, such as the Sports Persons’ evening, Summer Fair and EYFS cluster meeting.
  • Full Governing Body and both subcommittees met with B Lynch (new Headteacher) – this included sharing the School Development Plan, approving the school budget and discussing next steps in the school’s development under the new Headteacher.

   

Spring term 2023:

  • Governors supported school through the Section 8 ofsted inspection.
  • A new trust governor was appointed – Reverend Rob Jackson is the new vicar at St John’s church and he was welcomed as a John Greaves trust representative.
  • The departmental governors met with their phase staff in school and discussed the latest school development issues.
  • The SEND governor attended local authority SEND training

  • The full governing board was involved in the appointment of the new Headteacher and monitored the handover transition period.
  • One governor on the personnel sub committee attended the safeguarding training.
  • The finance sub committee approved a financial checklist and reviewed the school fund audit.
  • Governors approved the 23-24 staffing structure and budget projection
  • Governors reviewed the interim school development plan
  • The governors have taken steps to recruit a new trust governor.
  • We have advertised, interviewed and appointed a new Headteacher for Irlam Endowed. The new Head will start after the Easter break on the 17th April 2023.
  • Governors have attended some safeguarding training and some pupil premium training.
  • The three Departmental governors attending meetings with the staff in school to look at their latest data and updates on their action plans.
  • The governors have supported the sports activities in school

   

Spring term 2022

  • Governors supported head with staffing restructure
  • New governors had a tour of the school, as now allowed to visit school again
  • Governors approved the 2022-23 budget
  • Governors carried out the Headteacher’s appraisal
  • Governors approved several new curriculum policies and extended their knowledge of subject leadership.
  • A new parent governor was appointed in February 2022

  

Autumn 2021

  • Full Governing Board meeting – 25/11/21
  • The three departmental governors have been into school to attend their departmental governors termly meeting. The governors were involved in discussions about key departmental issues, the impact of covid and the departmental action plan for 21-22.
  • Several governors renewed their safeguarding training.
  • The governing board has representatives for all the main key roles. This includes a safeguarding, looked after children, health and safety and SEND governor.
  • New class governors were appointed
  • Governors supported consultation on reading records and parent comms
  • New Health and Safety governor appointed with overview of H/S management and liaison link governor with the local authority.
