The PE curriculum at IEPS is fully mapped from Reception to Year 6. We use the Andy Frapwell model for assessing the children without levels and our children have a long standing tradition of leaving our school fully engaged in PE and School Sport and with all the fundamental skills, attitudes and knowledge to choose sport for life.

Gymnastic, dance and games lessons at this stage focus on the core skills of Physical Literacy (agility, balance and coordination) with an emphasis of playing lots of games that improve these skills with plenty of opportunity for the teachers or other adults to give successful intervention.

As children journey through the EYFS, they will start to put some of these skills into some simple football and tennis based games.

Gymnastics  Journey

Children begin to develop a gymnastic vocabulary in Year 1 (Pencil, star, straddle pike, forward rolls etc…). Progression to more difficult and complex shapes, rolls and movements ( arch, dish, japana, teddy bear roll, cartwheels etc…) support children in aspiring to make more difficult routines.

Children learn the vault routine (all 6 parts) and progress in height to using a 2/3 tier vault with or without a spring board.

By Year 2, children have developed a good amount of gymnastic vocabulary and in Year 2 are asked to begin to create sequences on floor, small and large apparatus of 6-8 elements.

Dance Journey

In Year 1 children learn a routine to a verse and chorus of a song. The routine is created by the teacher and children have to learn and copy. Focus is always about quality of movement. Some children are ready to create their own movements at this stage to a short phrase of music. Some children can suggest changes and improvements to teacher sequence and repeat this for verse 2.

In Year 2 this process is repeated but there is a short phase of music where children can be creative.

Invasion Games

In Games, children learn to send and receive different objects with better control and consistancy. They run and move in different ways and for different purposes. Once these key skills are embedded children will begin to apply these skills in a more competitive context. (small sided versions of games – 2 v2 or 3v3 rugby, football netball type games).

In Year 1 and Year 2 we also ensure all children can ride a bike and a scooter.

Athletics Journey

In Athletics children learn to run for distance (pace themselves) and speed. They learn to throw different objects for distance and accuracy.

Tennis Journey

Children use their Physical Literacy skills in a new context. They learn to move a ball with a tennis racket. They play simple games individual and in pairs aimed to improve children’s manipulation of the ball using a racket. They will learn basic control and simple accuracy. As children move into Year 2 children will learn the different shots (forehand, backhand underarm serve and overarm serve) some children will progress to using a net for some of their core tasks. Most competition at this stage is self-completion or fun team games.

Striking and fielding games

Children learn the idea of retrieving objects. Children strike different objects with hands and feet and simple objects – all in simple games. Children bowl and throw objects into different targets.

Health and Fitness

In Key Stage 2 – Children’s fitness is measured using the Cooper Test. Children receive feedback about their results and discussions are used on the next steps to improve fitness.

In Key Stage 2, core skills are still taught to pupils learn to adapt their fundamental skills to play more competitive games in a wide range of sports. Providing a large range of sports for all our children is something we pride ourselves with at IEPS.

Swimming Journey

Year 3

Autumn and Spring term is spent at Irlam Pool. Once all children are confident in the water they work towards their different Key Stage 2 passes.  In summer of Year 3 the parents are asked to continue taking their children swimming and catch up swimming lessons are grasped where possible.

Year 5

Summer term we take Year 5 to Irlam pool to ensure all children meet their targets in swimming. We also have a programme of water polo at this point.

Netwall games

In Year 3/4 children learn to play real tennis and begin to compete against children of similar abilities. In Year 5/6 these tennis skills are transferred to move difficult games of volleyball and badminton. Tennis is a large focus in Year 3/4 because it is a school games sport. Table tennis is taught when competing with space is an issue (can be taught in classroom)

Invasions sports:

Children do more traditional sports in Year 3/4 – football, rugby (full contact rugby will be taught from Year 5/6 for children who are ready – tackling with correct technique). They will also play dodging games such as bench ball, dodgeball and Rock-it ball.

In Year 5/6 more difficult sports are taught – Hockey, lacrosse, Basketball, High 5, Handball. Street hockey will be the new sport for next year.

Dance

In Year 4 and Year 5 children are taught a style of movement sequence. They learn a routine as a whole class and then take a section of the same music to create a dance that reflects the music/genre. These dances are recorded and self-assessed and improved on. Quality of movement is the over-riding driver of these lessons.

Gymnastics

Children come into KS2 with a fantastic gymnastic language so every lesson will have a creative element – either on floor, beam or equipment. There will be a teaching focus each week, which will rotate around key steps, vaulting, beam routines (self-created individual to paired to small groups as they move up school. Some children are invited to our gymnastics club to prepare for a gymnastics competition and then an open gymnastics club is for all children in the summer term.

Athletics

Children learn to run for speed and distance. They jump for height and distance and they throw more traditional objects for distance and accuracy.
