Irlam Endowed Primary School

At Irlam Endowed our geography curriculum is designed to develop pupils’ curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them throughout their lives.

Learners will investigate a range of places, both in Britain and abroad to help develop knowledge and understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes. We provide opportunities to investigate and enquire about our local area, this will support children to develop an understanding of who they are, their heritage and what makes our local area so unique and special.

We aim to give our learners strong geographical knowledge, good enquiry skills, the ability to use a range of maps, the skills to collect and analyse data and the ability to communicate information in a variety of ways. All pupils will be encouraged to ask questions, think critically and develop their own perspective of the world. By deepening our children’s knowledge of geography, we will help them to understand how the world has grown and changed over time, the diversity of people’s lives.

We want the children to have a love of geographical learning, gaining knowledge and skills through high quality teaching both inside and outside the classroom. Wherever possible, our geography curriculum is enhanced by trips and visitors, as these opportunities bring the curriculum alive and create lifelong memorable experiences.

As the future generation responsible for our planet, we want our children to have a sense of respect for the world and the possibility for us to live sustainably for the future.

Planning

At Irlam Endowed we plan using the National Curriculum. We enhance the curriculum using knowledge planners this means we implement a progressive geography curriculum that builds on prior knowledge and skills year on year.

Our topic approach has links to our curriculum policy and cultural capital policy. Learners will revisit geographical skills and knowledge in order to embed and deepen understanding.

The lessons are carefully planned to ensure that all children are well supported and the opportunity for depth is planned for. We ensure that trips and visiting experts enhance the learning for the children.

The impact of our geography curriculum is that our learners are equipped with the geographical skills and knowledge that will enable them to be ready for the secondary school curriculum and for life as an adult in the wider world.

Understanding the world is the area which links to the Geography Curriculum

Understanding the world involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community. The frequency and range of children’s personal experiences increases their knowledge and sense of the world around them – from visiting parks, libraries and museums to meeting important members of society such as police officers, nurses and firefighters. In addition, listening to a broad selection of stories, non-fiction, rhymes and poems will foster their understanding of our culturally, socially, technologically and ecologically diverse world. As well as building important knowledge, this extends their familiarity with words that support understanding across domains. Enriching and widening children’s vocabulary will support later reading comprehension.

People, culture and communities

By the end of their nursery experience children may be:

Showing interest in the lives of people who are familiar to them;
Remembering and talking about significant events in their own experience;
Recognising and describing special times or events for family or friends;
Showing interest in different occupations and ways of life;
Knowing some of the things that make them unique, and talking about some of the similarities and differences in relation to friends or family

By the end of reception children working at the expected level will:

Describe their immediate environment using knowledge from observation, discussion, stories, non-fiction texts and maps;
Know some similarities and differences between different religious and cultural communities in this country, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class;
Explain some similarities and differences between life in this country and life in other countries, drawing on knowledge from stories, non-fiction texts and –when appropriate –maps

The natural world

By the end of their nursery experience children may be:

Able to comment and ask questions about aspects of their familiar world, such as the place where they live or the natural world;
Talking about some of the things they have observed such as plants, animals, natural and found objects;
Talking about why things happen and how things work;
Developing an understanding of growth, decay and changes over time;
Showing care and concern for living things and the environment

By the end of Reception children working at the expected level will:

Explore the natural world around them, making observations and drawing pictures of animals and plants;
Know some similarities and differences between the natural world around them and contrasting environments, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class;
