Writing
"Reading is like breathing in; writing is like breathing out" (Pam Allyn)
At Irlam Endowed, we value children's ability to express themselves clearly both verbally and in writing. We believe that through writing children can express their thoughts, feelings and world views alongside developing their imaginations. Our writing curriculum is sequenced to develop the core areas of writing: spelling, grammar, understanding of different genres and being exposed to a variety of different authors' work.
Throughout the school, there is a focus on 9 key text types of which children will develop an understanding and build their skills in producing independent pieces:
Recount | Narrative | Information Report | Poetry | Explanation | Description | Exposition | Discussion |
Procedure / Instruction |
A recount tells what has happened. | A narrative tells a story. | An information report is used to present information about a chosen topic. | Poetry is a wide ranging text type and has many purposes and forms. | An explanation makes clear how or why things are, or how things work. | A description details the characteristic features of a particular thing. | An exposition puts forward a particular point of view. | A discussion presents information and opinions about more than one side of an issue. | A procedure tells how to do something. |
Writing Progression
Our writing curriculum is sequentially planned to ensure that children build their knowledge of all writing skills as they move throughout the school. In each year group, high-quality stimuli have been chosen to inspire and support children in developing their writing skills.
For more information about our writing progression, please see the progression document below:
Spelling and Grammar
Our Spelling scheme runs across Years 1 to 6 following the Spelling Shed scheme. There are 6 stages in developing children's spelling knowledge. Within teaching sessions, there are links to phonics, morphology and etymology which develop children's understanding of the English spelling system and develop their vocabulary. The progression of spelling has been included in the writing progression document so that objectives can be linked to a range of writing genres.
Our grammar scheme runs across Years 1 to 6 following the Grammarsaurus scheme. The scheme focuses on building children's understanding of grammar progressively so that they can apply grammar rules from different contexts into their own independent pieces. The progression of grammar has been included in the writing progression document so that objectives can be embedded into writing unit model texts.
