Irlam Endowed Primary School has an 8 place Language Resource Provision. The provision consists of a classroom and a separate speech and language room where we deliver speech and language therapy. The children placed here are between 4 and 7 years old and have a range of speech and language disorders. These include difficulties with understanding, expression, phonology, semantics and pragmatic language.

All our children have an EHCP which states their primary area of SEND need is speech, language and communication.

The key stage 1 Resource has been based at Irlam Endowed since September 1992. It is one of three provisions in Salford for infant aged children.

Our resource is staffed by a Teacher, one level 3 Teaching Assistant and one Teaching Assistant. Our speech therapist visits school one day per week to work with the children and to support the staff in the provision.

The Language Resource at Irlam Endowed provides a specialist and nurturing educational environment for children with speech and language disorders. The children receive intensive teaching and speech and language therapy whilst still being part of a mainstream inclusive primary school. The support they receive consists of bespoke provision and intervention with Teachers, Teaching Assistants and our Speech and Language Therapist. We all work closely together as part of a team to ensure that the children are happy and feel confident and supported to make the best possible progress they can.

The children follow a broad and progressive curriculum that includes all the strands of the National Curriculum taught in the mainstream classes. However there is extra emphasis on all aspects of language and literacy as these are areas of difficulty for all children in the language resources.

The Language Resource children take a full and active part in the life of the school.  They join the mainstream children at play times and dinner times. They are also involved in class and whole school assemblies and join their mainstream classes for all trips and unique experiences.

The Language Resource children integrate into their mainstream classes for lessons.  The level of integration differs for each child depending on their need, attention and listening skills and ability to access the curriculum.

Before placement in the Language Resource a child will have had a full assessment by an Educational Psychologist and a sustained period of Speech and language therapy. Other additional agencies may also be involved. Evidence from these interventions is considered by the local Education Authority who recommend Language Resource if it is appropriate.

At every stage, parents are involved and their wishes sought to ensure a partnership between home, school and the local Education Authority to best meet the needs of the child.

Children may be eligible to be transported between home and school in a minibus or taxi, according to the Local Education Authority Transport Policy. There is an escort on the transport who takes responsibility for the children.

At the Y2 annual review a recommendation will be made around placement moving forward into KS2.  There are a number of options school and parents can recommend;

  • Return to mainstream, either with us at Irlam Endowed or back to their local primary school
  • Move to a junior Language Resource Provision as the child still has significant language needs which require intensive additional support
  • Move to an alternative setting such as an MLD / ASD Provision or specialist school ie Springwood.

Any move is made in agreement with the parents, school and local Education Authority and a carefully planned transition programme is organised to ensure a smooth and successful change of placement.
